Purdy Youth Empowerment and Leadership Project
Welcome

Thank you for visiting our page! The Purdy Recycling Project functioned for many years as a full-scale recycling program in our hometown of Purdy, MO before partnering with YEP. We have joined in the YEP conversation to find ways we can encourage others to recycle as well as learn more about community involvement from our peers.

  • YEPO - The Grant Making Process
This was a handy outline the YEP in Ozark (YEPO) created for their small group presentations at the Youth Philanthropy Conference this year. I think it's a very helpful resource for YEP chapters who are working to host a grant round this year.

  • Our fourth video was "Food Fight" and it was followed by a 45 minute discussion about the meaning of what we'd seen. Here are some of the comments:

  • It's Thursday, March 10th, and we've just watched "Food Inc.," the third film in our sustainability/ wellness series. It's interesting to watch viewpoints shift during these films, and here are some comments from those present today:

Armando: "We today think we are over Mother Nature" and "I never knew that pigs had to get into mud to cool themselves off."

Octavio: "Local and organic food costs more, but it's worth it. We need to make organic food more available for people."

Cynthia: "Most of our food comes from clever re-arrangements of corn. 30% of the U.S. land base is being used to plant corn, and it's being fed to cows because it's cheap and it makes them fat. It's not farming anymore, it's mass production."

Abi: "I didn't know that McDonald's bought the most meat in the world, or that chicken houses cost around $200,000-$300,000 per house."

Anibal: "The companies cover up what happens in the process, to the shrink-wrapped packages we see in stores, so we don't quit eating their products."

Julio: "Where does the farm end and the multi-billion dollar factory begin?"

  • Solid Waste Forum--3/3/11
The YELP team travels to Jefferson City and dazzles officials with our passion for recycling.

  • On Friday, March 3rd., five members of the Purdy YELP traveled to Jefferson City to speak about the Purdy Recycling Project to a state-wide forum on solid waste. With about 100 adults present in the room, the team gave a fast-paced, humorous and personalized talk that would later be described as "far and away the best of the day" by an attendee. All sorts of people wanted to speak to us and it looks like the state wants to tele-conference with us in the future, as we may now be the go-to experts on profitable school recycling programs in Missouri. We also asked the state officials to consider our need for the state to begin thinking about banning oil filters from landfills--we need to be able to charge a fee to pick them up and dispose of them.

  • The Purdy YELP watched its first sustainability video today-- "The Future of Food." here are some responses from some of the students:

Gonzalo: "I like how they said Americans only fear inconvenience."

Anibal: "I really enjoyed learning about this stuff. I think teens should get more into it and give the farmers more credit."

Julio: "I didn't know that feeding dead cows to cows causes mad cow disease."
